Op een frisse zaterdagochtend staan acht zenuwachtige individuen op een parking in Bouillon klaar om zich te wagen aan de ingangstesten voor de achtste Mount Coach Academy. Zes gelukkigen zullen gedurende 2,5 jaar de bergsport in al z’n disciplines doorgronden onder begeleiding van ervaren instructeurs en met ondersteuning van de Klim- en bergsportfederatie en genereuze sponsors. Het traject vereist een grote motivatie en inzet als basisvoorwaarden, doch dient er ook het een en ander bewezen te worden tijdens het selectieweekend.

Enkele tassen koffie en een stresskakske later schiet de groep in gang. Vergezeld van een paar oudgediende Mount Coachers en organisator Sanne marcheert de groep over de GR16 van Bouillon richting Vresse, terwijl Koen met de auto op strategische punten de kudde opzweept. Een traject van 30 km met de nodige hoogtemeters en beladen met een uitrusting die een alpiene instijg moet simuleren dient deze proef in minder dan 6 uur te worden afgerond. Het parcours ligt er bijzonder nat bij en het gerucht gaat dat oudgediende Denis tot z’n borst nat zou zijn geweest… Spanning en avontuur! Voor het avondmaal in de Chavéehut moet een schriftelijke toets de achtergrondkennis van de deelnemers peilen. De avond wordt afgesloten met pittige interviews die de motivatie op proef stellen. Alle acht kruipen de kandidaten met twijfels en onzekerheid in hun tentje.

Zondag biedt een kort venster van ideale condities voor de klimtest op de rotsen van Marche-Les-Dames. Met net voldoende tijd kan iedereen laten zien wat’ie waard is, waarna de hemelsluizen besluiten dat het wel goed geweest is. De deelnemers slagen in principe allemaal voor de proeven, wat de selectie geen gemakkelijke opgave maakt. Na overleg tussen Sanne en Koen valt het oordeel. Zes gelukkigen mogen toetreden tot de Mount Coach Academy 8. Een korte introductie:

Opgegroeid in de Schotse Highlands en door een mysterieuze lotswending in België terecht gekomen. Zelfstandig vertaler, yogaleraar in spé en creatieve duizendpoot. Door vaderlief op haar zevende ingebonden en de rots op gestuurd, the rest as they say…

Tobias (25)

Lijdt net als z’n grote broer aan het syndroom van Speelmans met als symptomen: kracht, conditie en energie van een Duracell konijn. Stelt zichzelf immer ten dienste van de groep. Een ervaren grotverkenner van achtergrond.

Simon (18)

De ‘kleine’ van de groep, maar even vaak noemen we hem ‘Arnold’ naar zijn Schwarzeneggeriaans volumineuze biceps. Vrijgezelle dames kunnen deze charismatische adonis frequent tegen het lijf lopen in klimzaal Wallstreet, alwaar hij zich naar het voorbeeld van Wolfgang Güllich afbeult.

Brecht (22)

Atleet van achtergrond, waar z’n Olympische conditie getuige van is. Bio-ingenieur in opleiding. Immer goedlachs en laat zich door z’n optimisme nooit uit het lood slaan. Houdt z’n gebeitelde lichaam in topvorm in klimzaal Stordeur.

Bavo (25)

Doctoreert in de fotonica. Bouldert het hele team onder tafel en marcheert aan 30km/u terwijl hij z’n viool bespeelt. Kan overigens bivakkeren in z’n eigen gezichtsbeharing.

Pieter (25)

De mens die mensen bestudeert, socioloog van stiel. Op onderzoek of de bewering ‘als ge in Freyr kunt klimmen kunt ge overal klimmen’ waarheid bevat. Naast dit porseleinen paradijs aan de Maas al eens op een tweewieler terug te vinden.

On a crisp Saturday morning, eight nervous individuals stood at a parking in Bouillon ready to take on the try-outs for the eighth edition of Mount Coach Academy. Over the course of 2.5 years, six lucky individuals will strive to learn all there is to learn about all mountaineering disciplines under the supervision of experienced instructors and with the support of the KBF (Belgian Climbing and Mountaineering Federation) and generous sponsors. A minimum requirement for the programme is motivation and commitment, yet they still need to be put to the test during the try-outs weekend.

After a couple of coffees and a stress shit, the group is off. Joined by a couple of veteran Mount Coachers and the organiser, Sanne, the group sets off on the GR16 from Bouillon to Vresse, while Koen parks the car at strategic locations to flock the herd. A 30 km route with a number of steep climbs and loaded with equipment to re-create an alpine style approach, this test needs to be completed in less than 6 hours. The route was especially wet and rumour has it that veteran Denis plunged chest deep into the water… Excitement and adventure! Before dinner in the Chavée hut, participants had to complete a written test to gauge their background knowledge. The evening ended with intense interviews that put everyone’s motivation into question. All eight participants crawled into their tents filled with doubt and uncertainty.

On Sunday there was a small window with ideal conditions for the climbing test in Marche-Les-Dames. Once everyone had shown what they’re made of, it was decided to call it a day just the nick of time before the heavens opened up. All participants passed all the tests, which made the selection even harder. After a conversation between Sanne and Koen, the decision was made. Six lucky individuals were selected to join Mount Coach Academy 8. Meet the team:

Ellen (24)

Grew up in the Scottish Highlands and thanks to a mysterious stroke of fate she ended up in Belgium. Self-employed translator, soon to be yoga teacher and a creative all-rounder. Thanks to her father she was tied into a rope at the age of seven and sent up the rock, the rest as they say…

Tobias (25)

Like his older brother he also suffers from Speelmans syndrome, the symptoms being: strength, fitness and the energy of a Duracell rabbit. Always there for the group. An experienced cave explorer.

Simon (18)

The ‘baby’ of the group, otherwise known as ‘Arnold’ due to his Schwarzenegger-sized biceps. Single ladies can often find this charming Adonis hanging around Wallstreet, where inspired by Wolfgang Güllich he trains his body to exhaustion.

Brecht (22)

Has an athletic background that is apparent from his Olympic fitness. Studying to be a bio-engineer. A permanent smile on his face and an endless supply of optimism. Keeps his chiselled body in shape in Stordeur.

Bavo (25)

Working on a PHD in photonics. Can out-boulder the whole team and walks 30 km/h whilst playing the violin. Not to mention, he can also bivy in his own beard hair.

Pieter (25)

The human who studies humans, i.e. sociologist. Looking into the truth behind the claim that ‘if you can climb in Freyr, you can climb anywhere’. If he’s not at this porcelain paradise next to the Meuse, you’ll probably find him on a two-wheeler.
